Hi, Wes. Sorry to hear about Aunt Joy. I hope everyone over there is doing well. It's never an easy time, but I'm sure everyone can be happy that she lived a long, full life.
Say hello to Laurel and your family for me.

In Tears Love Chad
Oh I’m so sorry Laurel! To tell you the truth I am in tears. I LOVE JOY like she was my own grandmother. She was TRULY AN EXCEPTIONAL LADY AND VERY WORLDLY and WISE. I remember all those great cookouts we had in your grandparents back yard. I remember her very LOVELY DISTINCT LAUGH and those unique glasses she wore on a chain. I remember her ambition in her own real estate like my grandfather (do you know they are the same age, but your grandmother had the tenacity to live a full decade beyond my grandparents). She truly had a love for life. When we all ended up back at this apartment after (what I believe was my grandfathers funeral) your grandmother had a conversation with me on the sofa THAT BLEW ME AWAY! Had no idea that she was originally from Sacramento California. We talked about California, Seattle, the West Coast, roadtrips, National parks, the great outdoors. Her eyes were so open to the world. She was extremely accepting and VERY BRIGHT. Most of all she was WAY AHEAD OF HER TIME. I could see/feel HOW MUCH SHE LOVED YOU LAUREL!
PLEASE GIVE ALL MY LOVE AND CONDOLENCES to your family. Give yourself, your mom, and Jon a very big, loving, and sincere HUG from me! If there is anything I can do for you and your family let me know! If you need to talk, a shoulder to cry on or to come to Bowerman’s Beach club, have lunch on the beach, or just stare out to sea in silent contemplation, let me know. I want to be here for you and your family in any way I can!
LOVE CHAD
PS: there could not have been a more apt name for your grandmother than JOY!!! That is always how I will remember her!

I Miss Her by Karen
Joy Guthrie Durell, the last of that generation for my East Coast family, died at 6:00 pm, on Saturday, September 3, 2011, one month and two days after her 97th birthday.
She followed her family roots as she, too, was a pioneer. When she was 21 she left California and traveled by herself for three days on the Vista Dome train across the country to join my father’s old New England family who had ideas quite different from those of the little farming village of Winters, California where she grew up.
Don’s mother, Sadie Durell, loved her at first sight and taught her all things Massachusetts style. Mom’s first cooking triumph was Boston Baked Beans following a miserable failure, trying to please her new husband, by boiling the beans with no seasoning. By the time I took notice she has become a wonderful cook.
Mother finally had time to pursue her own star after we moved to Falmouth in 1950. Joy worked for our local newspaper selling advertising and came to realize that the local realtors all sold houses but no one specialized in summer rentals. She’d found her niche. She got her Brokers license and opened her own office in our kitchen. She must have done this for 35 successful years.
One last thought. Way ahead of her time and for as long as I can remember, Mom was a proponent of wind energy for electricity. She saw it as an untapped power source here on Cape Cod with our constant wind, way back in the 50s. Her dream is happening now.
I miss her and revere her memory.
